Gladys Tantaquidgeon (Mohegan) was a medicine woman, tribal elder, author, and anthropologist who helped to found the oldest tribally-owned museum in the United States, the Tantaquidgeon Museum, which is still located in Uncasville, CT to this day. This extraordinary culture keeper, who lived to the age of 105, influenced generations of Mohegan tribal members, as well as the anthropologist Frank Speck, and also served as a cultural advisor to our own museum in the 1990s. In honor of Women’s History Month, join Rachel Sayet (Mohegan), who has a Masters in anthropology and museum studies from Harvard University, for a virtual presentation and discussion on the life and legacy of her great aunt Gladys. As a budding herbalist, training with Natives and non-Native alike, Rachel will focus on Gladys‘s work as an anthropologist, ethnobotanist, and herbalist and will discuss the influence that Gladys had on her tribe and her family.
