Building a Community in our Village: Strawberry Moon Volunteer Day at IAIS

For thousands of years, Native communities in the Eastern Woodlands lived in villages consisting of dome-shaped structures called wigwams, made out of saplings, bark and/or reeds. Our Replicated Algonkian Village is an important exhibit and teaching tool that thousands of students and visitors experience every year. Just as it was for the indigenous inhabitants of this area, maintaining our village is an ongoing process that requires a lot of work, but many hands make light work. Join a community of IAIS staff and volunteers for a village maintenance day. Along the way, learn about traditional tools, materials, and techniques that indigenous communities used to thrive for thousands of years in our area. As an act of reciprocity, and in honor of the Strawberry Moon, enjoy strawberry-themed light refreshments. 

Note: This is an outdoor program that will involve a certain amount of strenuous physical work. All minors should be accompanied by an adult. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy footwear, and are encouraged to bring a water bottle, gloves,  and lunch if staying for both time slots.
