This program features two distinct activities. You can sign up for one or both of them using the ticket options listed below:
Pokanoket Presentation at Noon
Historically, the Pokanoket people have resided in Sowams, also known as "Pokanokick", which is located in present day Rhode Island and Massachusetts. At the time of the first contact with Europeans, the Pokanoket were the headship tribe of a greater confederacy with more than 60 tribes, bands, and clans throughout New England under the leadership of Massasoit Ousamequin who allowed the English to settle in what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts. Devastating epidemics, colonial encroachment and war weakened the Pokanoket forcing them from their land. Enslavement, exile and centuries of persecution followed. This presentation by Pokanoket historian Don Strong Turtle and Sachem Tracey Dancing Star will introduce the audience to their peoples long history and how they assert sovereignty in today’s political landscape.
This program is part of an ongoing series commemorating the hundredth anniversary of the Indian Citizenship Act that examines the complex history and current reality of Native American citizenship and rights.
Brick Stitch Beading Workshop with Eva Newell at 2:00pm
For generations, Native peoples have decorated clothing and items with materials found in nature, such as shell, stones, seeds and porcupine quills. In more recent centuries, multi-colored glass beads have become a favorite medium, as well. Join artist and educator Eva Newell (Pokanoket Tribe, Pokanoket Nation) for a beading workshop in which participants will make a beaded medallion that incorporates the brick stitch technique. This technique allows for complex patterns and interesting designs and is often used to make earrings and other jewelry. Choose from one of several patterns and spend an afternoon making a unique project while learning about the history and culture of the Pokanoket people. Supplies will be provided if you wish to turn your project into a keychain or pendant.
Please note: Due to the patience and dexterity required for this project, this workshop is recommended for adults. Depending on your experience level, this workshop may take several hours, so we encourage you to bring a snack.
Space is limited, so pre-registration is requested for both programs. Please visit our website to register online. Questions? Please email events@iaismuseum.org or call (860) 868 0518. Pricing is dependent on which activity/activities you choose to participate in.
