Commemorations of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence reveal a complex history for Indigenous communities. Indigenous Nations have existed as sovereign entities long before the United States of America. They were integral to creating the conditions for the U.S. War for Independence. Their power and influence shaped the colonial world, their resources inspired colonial greed, and their systems of governance helped to create that of the United States. At the same time, the Declaration of Independence and the ensuing war caused upheaval for many Indigenous communities, which continue to have a lasting legacy today. Join Irene Norman (Mohawk descent), IAIS Director of Educational Programming, for a presentation on the context, history, and legacy of this document.
