From sachem’s son to servant, then soldier to sailor, Abimelech Uncas lived an incredible life in his 19 years. Join Ellery Thomas Leary, M.A. (Park Historian, Putnam Memorial State Park) at the Institute for American Indian Studies to learn more about one Mohegan boy’s journey, which took him from “Bentown” to the home of Norwich’s most prominent entrepreneur. Learn about his escape from indenture to join the Continental Army in its Siege of Boston, then track his military career from Valley Forge to the fateful Battle of Kingsbridge and beyond. Finally, find out about the privateering that led to his imprisonment on the notorious HMS Jersey. Building on the work of other scholars in this field, such as Vicki Welch of Seven Generations Research and David Naumec, Ph.D., Ellery will guide attendees through the newly identified primary source documents that fill in the details of Abimelech’s short but eventful life.
