Looking to expand your reading list and discuss a variety of issues and topics important to Native people? Please join our virtual book club, As They Speak: Native Voices in Today’s Literature. Based on a variety of topics and featuring a range of genres, all of the books we will be reading have been written by contemporary authors. This month, we’re reading The Break by Katherena Vermette, Red River Métis (Michif). When Stella, a young Métis mother, looks out her window one evening and spots someone in trouble on the Break — a barren field on an isolated strip of land outside her house — she calls the police to alert them to a possible crime. In a series of shifting narratives, people who are connected, both directly and indirectly, with the victim — police, family, and friends — tell their personal stories leading up to that fateful night. Through their various perspectives a larger, more comprehensive story about the lives of the residents in Winnipeg’s North End is exposed.

In order to have a more intimate conversation, space is limited. Please register below in order to receive the Zoom link. Questions? Please call (860) 868-0518 or email events@iaismuseum.org. This is a free event, but donations are appreciated. This event will NOT be recorded.
